NASI GORENG (FRIED RICE)

Classic Indonesian fried rice dish. Flavorful and easy to make

Preparation Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of cooked rice (preferably day-old)
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 red chili, sliced (optional, for heat)
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • 1/2 cup of peas
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • Fried shallots (for garnish)

  • 1. Prepare the Rice: If using freshly cooked rice, spread it out on a tray to cool and dry out a bit
  • 2. Cook the Aromatics: Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan or wok over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped onion, and sauté until fragrant and translucent
  • 3. Add Vegetables: Add the sliced chili (if using), diced carrot, and peas. Stir-fry for a few minutes until the vegetables are tender
  • 4. Scramble the Eggs: Push the vegetables to one side of the pan and pour the beaten eggs into the other side. Scramble the eggs until they are just set, then mix them with the vegetables
  • 5. Fry the Rice: Add the cooked rice to the pan, breaking up any clumps. Stir-fry everything together until the rice is heated through
  • 6. Season: Add the soy sauce, sweet soy sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well to ensure the rice is evenly coated with the sauces
  • 7. Finish and Serve: Stir in the chopped green onions. Serve the Nasi Goreng hot, garnished with fried shallots, and accompanied by cucumber and tomato slices
