My mums favourite dessert that she made only on special occasions. Still brings back wonderful memories.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup black sesame seeds
  • ¼ cup white rice (jasmine or glutinous; soak 30 min beforehand)
  • 3 cups water (plus more for soaking)
  • ¼ cup sugar (or to taste)
  • Pinch of salt

  • 1. Heat a dry skillet over medium-low
  • 2. Add sesame seeds and stir constantly until fragrant and popping slightly (be careful not to burn)
  • 3. Let cool
  • 4. Drain the soaked rice
  • 5. In a blender, combine toasted sesame, soaked rice, and 1 cup water
  • 6. Blend until very smooth
  • 7. Pour mixture into a saucepan with remaining 2 cups water
  • 8. Bring to a gentle boil, stirring constantly
  • 9. Reduce to low heat and cook until thickened (8–10 minutes)
  • 10. Add sugar and salt, stir until dissolved
  • 11. Ladle into bowls while warm
  • 12. Optionally drizzle with coconut milk or sprinkle with roasted nuts for texture
