Classic recipe for Jam Roly Poly, a traditional British dessert
Preparation Time: 25 minutes
Ingredients
200g self-raising flour
100g shredded suet (vegetarian or beef)
1 tablespoon caster sugar
A pinch of salt
150ml cold water
6 tablespoons of your favorite jam (strawberry, raspberry, or any other)
1 tablespoon milk (for brushing)
Butter (for greasing)
Optional: Custard or cream for serving
1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F). Grease a large piece of baking parchment with butter
2. Make the Dough: In a large bowl, mix the self-raising flour, shredded suet, caster sugar, and a pinch of salt. Gradually add the cold water and mix until you form a soft dough
3. Roll Out the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle about 1cm thick
4. Spread the Jam: Spread the jam evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges
5. Roll Up the Dough: Carefully roll up the dough from one of the short ends, like a Swiss roll. Pinch the edges to seal
6. Wrap and Bake: Place the roll on the greased baking parchment and wrap it up loosely, leaving some space for the dough to expand. Then wrap the parchment in a layer of foil. Place the wrapped roll on a baking tray
7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 35-40 minutes, until the roll is cooked through and golden
8. Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before unwrapping. Slice and serve warm with custard or cream
