ONIGIRI

Simple and delicious Japanese rice balls

Estimated Prep Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of cooked Japanese short-grain rice
  • Nori (dried seaweed) sheets, cut into strips
  • Salt
  • Fillings of your choice (e.g., grilled salmon, pickled plum (umeboshi), tuna with mayonnaise, or spicy cod roe)
Recipe Image
  • 1. Cook the Rice: Prepare the rice according to the package instructions. It’s best to use Japanese short-grain rice for the right texture
  • 2. Prepare Fillings: While the rice is cooking, prepare your fillings. For example, grill a piece of salmon and flake it, or mix canned tuna with a bit of mayonnaise
  • 3. Shape the Rice Balls: Once the rice is cooked, let it cool slightly so it’s easier to handle. Wet your hands with water and sprinkle a little salt on them to prevent the rice from sticking. Take a handful of rice and flatten it slightly in your palm
  • 4. Add Fillings: Place a small amount of your chosen filling in the center of the rice. Fold the rice around the filling and shape it into a ball, triangle, or cylinder
  • 5. Wrap with Nori: Wrap a strip of nori around the rice ball. The nori can be wrapped completely around the rice or just partially, depending on your preference
  • 6. Serve: Enjoy your onigiri fresh, or pack them for a tasty snack later!
  • 7. Onigiri is a versatile dish, so feel free to get creative with your fillings and shapes
